Chapter 35

Richie shut the door behind them, and moved to the kitchenette. “Make yourself comfy, lemme just grab you a glass.”

Melissa sat down on the couch and put her cell phone on the coffee table and set her key next to it. She pulled her legs under herself, and held a pillow in front of her. Richie entered a minute later holding an empty glass and a bottle of wine. “Is red ok? I already had the bottle open, but I can get the white one if you prefer,” he said setting the glass down.

“Whatever you’re drinking’s fine,” Melissa answered and gratefully took the glass he offered her and took a sip.

Richie sat down next to her on the couch, but was careful to give her, her space. He watched her finish most of her glass before she finally spoke. “Why did you think I’d come see you,” she asked looking him square in the eye.

“Well, I kinda have a sense about these things. You can’t really blame Johnny; he was with the same woman basically all of his life. He knows what makes her tick, and what’s gonna irk her, well as best as he could. But I’ve been single longer than I was married, so I know women in general the way that Jon knew his ex. I don’t pretend to understand women fully, but I can see when they’re upset even if they’re trying to hide it, and I can see when he does something that would make most women nuts,” Richie said. “But now I think the real question is why are you here. Not that I mind, but you’ve gotta give me something to go on here. A mind reader I’m not.”

“I don’t even know where to start. Since we left the concert I’ve been talking to Angela, trying to figure things out, but there’s nothing different in my mind now than what was there a couple hours ago. I mean I don’t even know what I’m feeling, how can I even begin to understand what he’s feeling, right,” Melissa asked taking another sip of her wine.

“Darlin’ you’re gonna have to give me a little more than that,” Richie said smiling.

“I know, I’m not even making any sense am I,” Melissa asked and reluctantly Richie shook his head. “You’ve been such a good friend to Jon all these years and you know how his brain works, that’s why I came to talk to you. To see what the hell he’s thinking without,” Melissa let her voice trail off.

“Without actually asking him, because you don’t want him to feel pressured into saying something he may not mean, or guilty for asking him certain things,” Richie offered.

Melissa nodded. “And you’ve been a good friend to me and Angela both, especially leading up to this trip. You really helped set my mind at ease. But I have to ask you a favor.”

“Shoot,” Richie said refilling her glass.

“Well, normally I would never ask you this, but I need to this one time. I know you’re Jon’s friend first and foremost. But can I ask that whatever comes out of my mouth tonight stays between us. I hate asking you to keep secrets from him, but just for my peace of mind.”

“Absolutely. What happens in this room stays in this room. I don’t tell Jon everything anyway, he just doesn’t know it,” Richie said smiling.

“Thanks, I really appreciate that. I guess I should start at the beginning, huh,” Melissa asked.

“Well that depends, do you mean like Adam and Eve. Or whatever ridiculously recent year you were born, or this morning,” Richie said trying to get her to smile.

Melissa laughed. “Somewhere between the last two. When I was younger I had my heart broken twice, pretty close together. After that I never thought that I’d be able to find love again, or be able to share my life with anyone and I was ok with that. I really was. But I’ll tell you that all changed when I met Jon. I tried so hard to do what I always do, put a wall up and eventually things fall apart but I never really let my guard down, so I couldn’t get hurt. I think I had my guard up for about the first week I knew Jon but then it just started crumbling down. And it scared the crap out of me. I found myself letting him into a part of my life that I didn’t know I had. Early on Angela even warned me that I was getting involved really fast. She told me to be careful because I didn’t know how he felt which is equally important with how I felt. But then we talked, kinda, and it seemed like we were on the same page. But then with everything that’s happened this weekend. God, Richie, I just don’t know anymore.”

“Look, I can tell you what I know. I know that he’s crazy about you. I know that you’ve been very good for him. He had a rough year and only after he met you, did any of us see him happy again. But I do know that he’s a little out of touch on the whole dating and relationship thing. I hate making excuses for him, but he really can’t help it because he has no experience. He knows how to have a wife, but dating, and getting to know each other. It’s more than a bit out of his comfort zone. Keep that in mind before you judge him too harshly. I’ve got the background, but tell me more. Start with ‘everything that’s happened this weekend,’” Richie said.

“Well, last night was amazing. It was so great to meet all of his friends, the rest of the band, and kinda get a feel of what he’s like when he’s around family. It was wonderful seeing a different side of him. And then after everyone went upstairs we stayed downstairs and talked for over an hour. He sang to me, it was perfect. The song was just right for me, for us and he told me that it seemed like he wrote it for me. I mean could there be anything more romantic that having a song written for you,” Melissa said remembering their special time together.

Richie winced at her words, but bit his tongue. She nodded at him in understanding and continued. “After that he told me about the divorce, and how badly he had been hurt. My heart nearly broke for him; I could feel his pain as he was talking. I really thought it was a breakthrough, ya know. Like the connection that we had was officially deep. He poured his heart to me. I thought we were on the same page.”

“Melissa, I think-“ Richie started, but stopped when she squeezed his hand.

“Just let me get this out, please,” Melissa asked.

“Of course, go ahead,” Richie said offering her a smile.

Melissa took a deep breath and poured herself another glass of wine before she continued. “So I went to bed thinking that we had this deep connection. That he was my boyfriend, that he was mine. And of course that I was his. Not that I’m neglecting Steph and the other people in our lives. Does that make sense?” Richie nodded as she took another sip of her wine.

“So this morning I wake up, and I told Angela everything that happened last night, and I’m like on another planet. I’m falling so hard and fast for him, but I feel comfortable with him, that it’s ok. Then his ex called and she was so nasty-“

Melissa was interrupted with an involuntary, “Don’t I know it,” from Richie, which made her laugh. He apologized and urged her to continue.

“Anyway she called and all of the feelings that I had so fresh in my mind took over. This was after all the woman who hurt someone that I truly care about. And she thinks she could start giving me orders, I think not. I’m telling you, I don’t even know where that came from. I promise I’m not jealous usually. I mean I see women hanging all over him and I could care less, but Dorothea really got to me. And Jon was fantastic; he didn’t seem to mind at all. If anything he seemed quite humored by everything, as did all of you,” Melissa said smiling.

“See that’s when we knew you were a keeper. Beautiful, independent, feisty, fearless, what’s not to love,” Richie said.

Melissa blushed a little, but continued. “He was so careful to make sure that me and Ang were protected and taken care of. He had me on his arm throughout the luncheon, introducing me as his girlfriend. When he does stuff like that he makes me go stupid, I feel like I’m 15 years old all over again. Not that I always mind, those were good times, but it can be a little embarrassing being in that mindset all the time as a woman who’s almost 30, kinda.”

“Kinda almost 30? God do I feel old that makes me kinda almost 50. That sounds so old. I’m almost half a century. But ok back to you, lemme I’m recap. Jon woos you stupid, does all the right things but then he turns into an ass,” Richie said still shaking his head at the almost 50 realization.

“Those are your words, not mine. So we’re at the concert, and you guys are killing it, like I can’t remember the last time I was at a concert that had that feel to it. And he sang, Welcome, and I felt it was for me. And then he danced with me, do you know how long I’ve been dreaming of that. And he told me that it was for me, and I was on top of the friggin’ world. The dedication he made to Lindsay was beautiful, we called the hospital after the show and she was beyond elated. But then that’s where he took a funny turn. I don’t know what it was that bugged me more. Before It’s my Life he made a dedication, remember. And I know that for me, because that’s my song,” Melissa said taking a breath before she continued.

“It was for you, we’ve heard all about how much you love that song. He must’ve mentioned it like half a dozen times back stage,” Richie said hoping to encourage her.

“But he said he was dedicating it to a ‘friend’. This probably sounds so juvenile. But it kinda hurt. After everything, I’m just his friend. I felt like I’m good enough for his friends to know about, but not everyone. I mean I didn’t think all this then, but looking at it now. Richie, his FRIEND,” Melissa felt her usually even temper start to rise, as a tear slid down her face.

Richie looked at the upset woman and chose his words carefully before he continued. “This may not be what you want to hear, but I can kinda see why he did that. I probably would’ve done the same thing. Now hear me out. The two of you have been in public together, right. But you’ve never really been in public together. No one knows the two of you are dating, because they haven’t been given a reason to think so. Mainly because Jon likes to keep his private life private. If he had said girlfriend in the middle of a concert all hell would’ve broken loose. I know the word doesn’t mean to us as it usually does to women, but it just wasn’t the place and situation to drop that bomb. You’ll know when it happens; enjoy it before they start hounding you. I do think that it was stupid for him not to give you a heads up there.”

“I understand. I mean it’s just a word, but it feels like I’m disposable to him in certain situations, I don’t know. Maybe I just need sleep,” Melissa said. Richie was right; it would’ve been out of place if he suddenly slipped in that he was dating someone. If she had been there strictly as a fan she would’ve been on her phone frantically trying to get all the details from someone with a computer instead of enjoying the rest of the show.

“There’s something else that’s bothering you. Maybe something that happened right before the encore,” Richie offered.

“This is gonna sound stupid, but until he started to play, I thought he was talking about me and he was gonna play my song from last night. It was stupid because of course it was his daughter. It was just that with the friend thing, it all exploded in my head at once. But for a half a second I was actually jealous of her, it sounds horrible I know. For me it was like I finally let my guard down for him and the way I went to bat for him with his ex. I don’t know I guess I kinda expected too much from him. Like he sees us as something other than how I see us.”

“He did have some choice words in that spiel he gave, but I’m sure he made it clear that his kids come first,” Richie started.

“He did, and I understand that. I admire that in him.”

“But I think that he needed to do that for her for his own psyche. And what she did for him, it was more therapeutic to him than I think he realized. He’s been struggling with their relationship, if he was doing the right thing. Letting her move in with him, starting a new relationship before he figured things out with her, and a million little things that he’s been dealing with as a parent. I think he just needed to tell her how much he loved her, and I know he really needed to hear what she had to say. But that’s not saying that there’s not a place in his life for you. I think you two are on the same page in your heads, but you just have to talk it out. I’ve heard both sides here, and I think you’re gonna be just fine.”

“Yeah? And you don’t think I’m a horrible person,” Melissa asked.

“Absolutely not, I haven’t changed my opinion of you from the first time we met. And just to put a bow on the night for you, the after party thing. I could see it bothered you, but that’s exactly how Dorothea would’ve expected and wanted to be treated. Disconnected from him, and left to herself. It was instinct for him, in no way was he trying to hide you or was he ashamed of you if that’s what you were thinking. And he was stupid-infatuated with Steph.”

Melissa let what he said sink in. “If you were me, what would you do,” she asked.

“Well, I would get some sleep before I talked to him. But you two need to talk, you need to set some ground rules. Like the girlfriend thing, and how you want him to act in public. Like leave you out of the spotlight or not,” Richie offered deciding it may not be the best time for a joke about what he would really say if he and Jon were dating.

“God you really do know women don’t you. I really appreciate this,” Melissa said looking at the clock that now read nearly 3 o’clock. “I think I’ve taken up enough of your time, and its really late.”

“It was a pleasure. I wish you could’ve come and visited me under happier circumstances; my door is always open for you. But I can’t in good conscience let you go, unless I know you’re gonna be ok, and you’ve completely said you’re peace,” Richie said seeing something still hidden in her eyes.

“What do you mean,” Melissa asked.

“There’s something else, I can see it. You don’t have to tell me, but I’m here if you need someone to listen,” Richie said his genuine eyes piercing her own.

At a loss for words Melissa just stared at him. “There was something else, I was planning on talking to Jon after the show about something else, but I just didn’t get the chance because I was upset about all this, and it was the last thing on my mind.”

“If it’s for Johnny’s ears only, that I wont ask for another word. Except its kinda looking like you need a practice run or something,” Richie said seeing the uncertainty in her eyes.

“I dunno,” Melissa stated. In her head a hundred reasons flew by that told her to keep her mouth shut and talk to Jon. A hundred more reasons, aided by the half a bottle of wine she consumed, told her that it couldn’t hurt to tell him. “If I tell you I need you to swear to me that you will never tell a living soul. I’m serious Richie, not a soul. Not Jon or any of the guys, I need to be the one to talk to Jon myself,” she said her head still spinning with the decision at hand.

“I’m not about to force you into anything, but if you want to tell me I’m here to listen to you,” Richie said. “And if you tell me your secret’s safe with me.”

Melissa refilled her glass and took a deep breath. “You know you’re making this so damn hard because I don’t really have a lot of friends that I can talk to like this. What the hell, I’ll start from the beginning. It all started about 11 or 12 years ago now. I was a junior in high school.” Melissa started and leaned back into the couch to make herself more comfortable.

Richie sat and watched her speak. She seemed to be disconnecting with him and her surroundings with each word she spoke. He intently listened to her seeing the pain flood from her face and was replaced by relief as she spoke. I have to keep this from Jon, he thought as she continued to speak.

Chapter 34

Jon was backstage listening to the screaming crowd as he took a much-needed breather before heading out for the finale. He sat in a folding chair with his blue shirt hanging open, as one of the wardrobe assistants had a hairdryer trying to cool him off and dry his hair at the same time. He had his cell phone in his right hand waiting for a message from his daughter that didn’t seem to be coming. Even though he was still focused on the show at hand, he couldn’t help but think of what an amazing show they had working tonight. Lost in his thoughts he barely noticed the noise of the crowd die down and Richie had to nearly yell to get his attention.

“Jon,” Richie began. “Hurry your ass up here, you’re gonna wanna see this.”

“What are you talking about man,” Jon asked nodding to the woman that he was dry enough to get back on stage.

“Just get up here, or you’re gonna be kicking yourself,” Richie said and pulled Jon out of his makeshift dressing room and up into the wings of the stage. Jon was stunned when he saw his daughter standing center stage with a microphone in her hand.

“What the hell is going on,” Jon said with a hint of irritability. He had always tried to keep his kids out of the limelight and it was a shock to see her before thousands of people, making herself the focus of their attention.

“Just shut up and listen. I swear sometimes you two share a brain,” Richie said and pushed him up on stage but kept him out of the lights not to take away from her moment.

Someone came up behind Richie and he quickly excused himself. Next to him the rest of the band appeared and they all exchanged unknowing glances. Leave it to Richie to be in on all the little secrets, Jon thought as Steph began to speak.

“Hi everyone, thanks for coming out tonight this show has been amazing. Probably one of the best I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been coming to shows since before I could walk or talk. I guess I should introduce myself my name is Stephanie Bongiovi. Firstly I just needed to come up here to thank my dad for the dedication he just made to me. I don’t know if he can even hear me, but I love you Dad.”

The audience let out a collective “aww” and Jon felt tears welling up in his eyes. He was standing in awe of her, her composure in the situation, and the comfort and eloquence in which she let her feelings flow.

“I’m sure Uncle Richie has him somewhere he can hear me. I owe him a big thank you because he was the integral piece of my plan tonight. Now I promise that I had no idea my dad was gonna sing to me, and he better not have known that I had anything planned for him tonight either. I was planning on doing this on his birthday, but he was down here with all of you and I couldn’t make that show but the youtube videos show he was having the time of his life. But this weekend and everything that’s happened recently, seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to try to show my dad just how important he is to me and how much I love him. And I could’ve done this at home or somewhere a little more private, but I want the whole world to know that I have the best dad in the whole world, and what an amazing man he really is when you get past the rock starness.

“When I was thinking of what song to sing there was one that I thought perfectly encompassed everything I was trying to convey. I know traditionally it’s a love song, but I always thought that the first person you’re really in love with is you parents because they are the first people who love you unconditionally and I’ve learned that time and time again.” Steph walked towards the back of the stage near Dave’s keyboards and Jon stepped back into the shadows just a bit so she wouldn’t see him just yet.

“Now I don’t know if I’ve really got this whole keyboard thing down, and I hope Uncle Dave doesn’t mind because I technically didn’t ask, so please bear with me,” Steph said looking at the four keyboards set up.

“Not so fast darlin’,” Richie said from the side of the stage. “I’ve got that little something you asked me to track down for you.”

Jon couldn’t see what he was referring to and tried to get a better view. The crowd was so captivated by the story that was unfolding before them, that they gave a surprisingly subdued cheer for Richie.

“How did you manage to pull this off,” Steph asked.

“You drop the name Richie Sambora and it makes it a little bit easier. Not much, but a little,” he said smiling. “I’ll leave you to your business, don’t mind me I’m just the messenger. Knock ‘em dead,” Richie said giving her a hug and a quick kiss on the cheek.

Jon saw three roadies wheeling a grand piano across the stage. Two more quickly followed with a piano bench, and a microphone stand. Richie appeared at Jon’s side as he whispered, “I told you, you weren’t gonna wanna miss this.” Jon looked back at him still in awe of everything, and saw his daughter settling in on the piano bench and adjusting the microphone stand as needed.

She played a few notes, to get her fingers warmed and ready. “Dad, I just want to say that I love you so much, and well, I’ll run the risk of sounding corny, but thank you for loving me.” The audience gave her a round of applause as she braced herself for the biggest performance of her life. She started to play flawlessly, and her voice effortlessly flowed through the arena.

It's hard for me to say the things
I want to say sometimes.
There's no one here but you and me,
And that broken old streetlight.
Lock the doors;
We'll leave the world outside.
All I've got to give to you,
Are these five words when I.

Thank you for loving me.
For being my eyes,
When I couldn't see.
For parting my lips,
When I couldn't breathe.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for loving me.”

Jon listened to her in amazement. Her voice and piano skills sounded so much more mature than her 15 years. He had never heard anything more beautiful, as his daughter bore her soul to him for the whole world to see. After all the time he worried if he was doing things right for her, it had been there right in front of him all along. The only thing she needed was his love, and that was something that he was sure to be able to give her. Overwhelmed with emotion he felt a tear flow down his face, but made no movement to hide it.

You pick me up when I fall down.
You ring the bell before they count me out.
If I was drowning you would part the sea,
And risk your own life to rescue me.

When I couldn't fly,
Oh, you gave me wings.
You parted my lips,
When I couldn't breathe.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for loving me,
For loving me”

As Steph closed the song with a piano solo, Jon made his way on stage tears fresh in his eyes. The audience gave her one of the loudest ovations of the night as he made his way to the piano. He took her in his arms and held her tight.

“Thank you baby girl, I really needed that,” Jon whispered in her ear as he kissed her forehead. He took the microphone from the stand and addressed the audience. “Can I hear it one more time for my not so little girl,” Jon asked giving a little bow as he presented his daughter. The obliged of course, and Jon swelled with pride. As they quieted down he continued, “Now I don’t know how the hell I’m gonna follow that but I’m sure as hell gonna try.” He smiled as the crowd cheered excitedly, and he led Steph off the back of the stage his arm firmly around her shoulder.

They were greeted backstage by four very proud uncles, and Jon’s emotions left him speechless. Compliments were flying, and they almost had to be pulled back on stage, once the piano was cleared, to finish the show. They played both encores without any further surprises and around 11:30 the band made their final curtain call and were heading backstage.

The band quickly showered and changed into street clothes before heading down to the larger room where they had been prior to the show. It was now transformed from an uneventful room to a post show meeting area with food and drinks for all. The room was filled with about 35 people, not including the band, that were somehow related to the Soul and had managed to get backstage. When Jon arrived he was happy to see that all of the attention was still on Steph as people were giving her much deserved praise. The sense of pride that he had felt watching her play came flooding back, and he didn’t know if he could be any happier.

Jon made his rounds of the room, but never really took his eyes off of his daughter and the grace that seemed to radiate off of her. He hardly noticed when Melissa and Angela said their goodnights shortly after midnight insisting that they had had enough of an adventure for one night. Jason accompanied them back to the hotel, and Jon checked in a little later to make sure that they had indeed arrived safely. The room began to empty out after 45 minutes or so and Richie was the first one of the band to leave around 12:30, mentioning something about Ava as he left. It didn’t even matter who Jon was talking too and what they were saying; the building could’ve been on fire and it wouldn’t have fazed him. Tonight was as close to perfect as it could get and there wasn’t anything that was changing that for him.

******

Around 1:30 Melissa had talked herself in circles to Angela and thought her head may explode if she wasn’t able to get some real answers about what had happened tonight. Contrary to her recent actions, she wasn’t a jealous woman by nature, but all day she found herself staking claim to a man, who she feared wasn’t as invested in their relationship as she was. He had referred to her as a friend after all. Melissa stood from the couch and grabbed her key and cell phone from her purse.

“Melissa, where are you going,” Angela asked. “Especially dressed like that,” she added gesturing to her pajamas and wet hair.

“I think there’s one person who can give me some straight answers, without all the bullshit. I’ll be back, don’t wait up for me,” Melissa said as she walked to the door.

“Melissa please tell me where you’re going,” Angela said catching the door before she could open it.

“I’ll be fine, Ang, I promise. I’m not even leaving the floor. I have my phone,” Melissa said determined to not be talked out of this.

“Ok, be careful. I’ll be right here when you get back,” Angela said giving her a quick hug.

Melissa nodded and walked out into the hallway. She walked with determined steps two rooms down and stopped outside the door. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I don’t need to ring the bell and wake him if he’s sleeping. She was about to turn to leave when there was no answer. It’s after 1:30 he’s probably not even back yet, or he can’t hear me knocking. She was about to give one more knock before giving up when the door opened to her surprise and relief.

“I’m sorry I know its late, but is it ok if I come in to talk to you for a couple of minutes,” Melissa asked looking up at him.

“Of course, come on in darlin’. I had a feeling I’d be seeing you,” he said.

Melissa looked up at the warm chocolate eyes welcoming her inside. God I hope this was the right decision, Melissa thought as she passed him in the doorway and made her way inside.

Chapter 33

As they usually were, the band was playing like their lives depended on it. They were in perfect sync with one another even with the couple month break. Jon especially seemed to be in a good mood, and he was telling stories and talking with the crowd before nearly every song. He spoke at length joking with the Soul players before singing the theme song of the AFL, “We Got It Goin’ On”.

Melissa and Angela were beside themselves, seeing the concert from a new perspective. They hadn’t stopped dancing along, waving their hands when necessary and even screamed when Richie and Jon would come over to their side of the stage. Right before Jon’s first wardrobe change he once again took the microphone.

“This is a song that I’ve just rediscovered. Every once in a while I go into the studio and I listen to a bunch of older stuff,” Jon began. “Sometimes I think, ‘What the hell were we thinking with this one?’ Other times, like with this one, I think, ‘I don’t know if we realized just how powerful this song is when we wrote it.’ This song actually wasn’t in the first couple drafts of our set list, but it’s been on my mind, so here it is. I’d like to dedicate it to each and every person out here tonight. No matter where you’re from, or where you’ve been, or what you do, you have to love yourself and accept who you are. ‘Cuz I know the five of us up here sure love ya, you’ve all just gotta learn to love yourselves a little bit more.” The crowd went wild at his last sentiment, and Angela grabbed Melissa’s arm and gave it a squeeze. “This song is about accepting where you are in life and taking it to wherever it leads,” Jon looked over to where Melissa was sitting and flashed an extra wide smile. “Now without any more of my yakking, this is Welcome to Wherever You Are.

As Jon started to play the opening Angela leaned over to whisper-yell into Melissa’s ear. “He was talking about you, ya know. He played that for you last week, and that look he gave you, I am so jealous.”

Part of Melissa knew she was probably right; the other part of her couldn’t stop seeing herself as just another fan in the crowd. Unable to find words she smiled back at Angela, and they quickly refocused to the stage.

She’s right isn’t she? Jon Bon Jovi is playing a song for me. For me! How on earth did I get this lucky, Melissa thought to herself as Jon began to sing. Half singing along with him, and 25,000 other screaming fans the other half letting her mind wonder as she listened to the lyrics.

I am caught between who I am and who I really wanna be. Who do I wanna be? I wanna be with him, I think. He’s helped me through so much; can I really close that door of my life? Is this a new beginning? I’ve made it this far, I’ve gotta believe that this is where I’m supposed to be and this is what I’m supposed to be doing. God makes no mistakes, right? So this is happening for a reason? Come on Mel let it go a little. Have fun, think later, party now.

By the time she cleared her thoughts she heard the last bit of Jon’s “my friend here is gonna sing you a little song” spiel and saw him leave the stage to a rowdy ovation for Richie, including wild screams from Angela.

“Well, thank you very much. This next song is one I haven’t sung in about 10 years, so forgive me if I don’t know all the words. I’m sure you all can help me out, if I need it. When I was talking to the world champion Philadelphia Soul this afternoon,” Richie paused and let the crowd scream their support. “I was talking with the AFL MVP, Matt D'Orazio,” and again the crowd erupted. “And his lovely wife, Nicole, had a request for me and how could I not oblige? So this is off of my Undiscovered Soul album, its called If God was a Woman.” More applause rang out as Richie began to play. It was an acoustic feeling version, without any drums or bass as Dave had been the only member of the band who had done any work on that cd with him.

When the song was almost over Melissa felt her phone vibrate in her pocket again, and saw that it was another text from Jon. dance with me??? Confused, Melissa grabbed Angela’s arm and showed her the message who shrugged in confusion as well. Melissa shot back a quick sure… as she knew the end of the song was near. The response she got was simple ;-) Melissa and Angela exchanged puzzled looks and Melissa tucked the phone back into her pocket and the crowd showed their appreciation to Richie for the rare treat.

The lights went black and a single light showed that Jon returned to his microphone center stage. He stood silently waiting for the music to start. Tico’s familiar intro to Always rang out through the arena followed by the guitar and keyboards. Automatically Melissa, Angela and even Steph, took out their lit cell phones and waved them along with the rest of the audience. Jon wondered over to the far side of the stage and up onto the ramps to interact with the fans. He made his way back to the main part of the stage and then turned over in their directions. Instinctively Melissa and Angela let out a scream as he came near them.

Jon was a few feet from them he locked eyes with Melissa as he sang, “Take a look at my face, there’s no price I won’t pay, to say these words to you.” As the guitar solo started up he grabbed her hand and pulled her on stage with him. Flustered, Melissa followed him on stage and began to dance with him. “I asked you if you wanted to dance,” he said in her ear.

“I had no idea you meant this,” she said still unable to grasp the fact that at this moment she was the one who people were giving those looks to. She was the one dancing with Jon.

“Now baby, what did you think I meant,” Jon said flashing his million-dollar smile.

“Not a clue. You guys are fantastic tonight,” she said smiling back at him.

“Well thank you darlin’. We had to make a couple changes to the set.”

“So I heard. I loved it, thank you,” she said. Somewhere, in the far distance she could hear Richie saying something, bringing them out of their little bubble.

“Miss your cue by just a little bit man,” Richie teased into his microphone.

Jon turned to look at him, his arm around Melissa’s shoulder. “Well I’m dancin’ with a beautiful woman over here, can you blame me for not paying attention to you?”

The band still played Always in the background as the two brothers bantered back and forth. “Don’t mind us, I’ll finish this one up for you,” Richie said as he gave the band a nod and they picked up from where Jon should’ve came in.

Melissa and Jon continued to dance, taking advantage of the blunder. “I can’t remember the last time I missed a cue like that,” he said laughing in her ear.

“Glad to know that I can make you go stupid, just as easily as you do it to me,” Melissa teased.

“But you know I should get back to work,” he said.

“You bet your ass you do. I’d be sorely disappointed if you spent all night dancing with me, and not singing,” Melissa said smiling.

“We’ll let him finish this chorus, it’ll make him feel special,” Jon said with a wink, and Melissa nodded along with him.

During the shorter solo at the end of the chorus, Jon gave Melissa his customary kiss and a smack on the ass, as she made her way off stage and he made his way back to his microphone stand.

“It’s about damn time you decided to rejoin us,” Richie teased as Jon stepped back in and finished the song as though nothing had happened.

When the song ended Jon took the microphone off of the stand and once again spoke with the crowd. “You know I don’t know if I’ve ever been this chatty with an audience before. Maybe I should just take you all home with me,” Jon started to the delight of the sold out arena. “But on a serious note, I have a dedication for this next song,” as he spoke there was a change in the tone of his voice. “I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering at a hospital up in Jersey and I met a very special girl who has definitely had an impact on my life. I end up thinking about her most of the week because she is such an incredible human being. She really is been an inspiration to everyone she meets. So this week she asked me to sing her, but I told her I’d do her one better. I told her I’d get her a live stream of tonight’s show and I’d dedicate it to her. I’m a man of my word, so I got Obie on the project and sure enough he managed to make it happen. Now I need everyone’s help here, can I get a big ‘Hi Lindsay’?”

The crowd happily obliged and Melissa couldn’t believe the lengths he was going to, to make one little girl happy. “Well thank you very much Philadelphia. This one is for you, Lindsay, but I’m sure there’s a lot of other grateful women here that wanted to hear the same thing.” And with that he began playing the opening of Jersey Girl with the rest of the band following. Regardless of the dedication he made every woman from New Jersey in the arena convinced herself that he was singing to her and Melissa and Angela were no different.

As the song came to a close, Melissa couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride that he had done so much for Lindsay, who she had come to adopt as a little sister. She knew that a hundred or so miles north one little girl was beside herself, at the very thought of what was transpiring before her. With all that had happened already during the show Melissa couldn’t help but feel that this was one of the highlights thus far. As the crowd’s applause died down, Jon smiled and said, “How ‘bout a trip back to the 80’s?” The crowd screamed their approval and the ground nearly shook as Dave played the familiar intro to Runaway.

They played hit after hit, until Jon took the microphone again with soft music playing in the background. “I’ve been talking to some friends of mine, who are big fans, and they told me that this is a big fan favorite, even though we don’t play it too much. So by popular demand, Richie play them what they want.” Richie played the opening notes of Dry County and again the floor shook, with the excitement from the fans. Bon Jovi shows always had an electric atmosphere, but with all the special treats that the band had in store tonight, Melissa had never seen a crowd so on fire.

The band played all ten minutes of Dry County before bringing it to a close, and the crowd showed their appreciation. Talking to the crowd again, Jon made yet another dedication. “This next song has become one of our biggest hits to date, and it’s about fighting for yourself. I know this songs means the world to a good friend of mine, so this one’s for you. You know who you are,” and as Jon said as Richie’s familiar talk box rang out with the opening chords of It’s my Life. Melissa half ignored the friend comment and stored it in the back of her brain to listen to her anthem. She sang along loud and proud, with tears brimming in her eyes. They were always present when she heard the song live; it was a reminder of all she had endured in her 28 years.

When the song finished and Richie once again took the stage, she took the opportunity to text Jon and sent him her heartfelt thanks. He sent her a quick response, and she quickly focused on Richie, who was singing his soul to the crowd. As he drew the song to a close, the crowd was nearly speechless from the extraordinary performance they had been given, but they managed to show their gratitude.

Jon returned to his usual position, center stage as they began These Days. The cell phones returned in full force as Jon crooned his way through the song. Yet another treat came as Jon pulled a harmonica out of his back pocket and played it flawlessly, leaving many women with their mouths hanging just above the floor as they watched him work his magic. A quick wink to their side of the stage left Angela squealing, as Tico counted them into the next song.

They sang the next five songs, rather uneventfully in comparison, but they were captivated by every note, hanging onto each word. Melissa dug in her pocket for her phone, waiting for a text message from Jon before the encore, but she was surprised to see him take the microphone yet again.

“You guys have been an amazing crowd tonight, I’d like to thank you all for coming out tonight,” he started as the crowd showed their appreciation. “I know I’ve been doing a lot of talking tonight, I hope you didn’t mind too much, I know these guys have.”

“Damn right we have. They paid to hear you sing,” Richie interjected much to the crowd’s delight.

“Anyway, I know I’ve been doing a lot of dedicating, but I’ve got one more to make. Then I promise that’s it for tonight,” Jon continued and Dave started some soft music in the background. “As most of you probably know this last year has been a rough one for me, and I don’t know where I’d be without my brother’s behind me. What I do know is that six weeks ago, my life changed for the better and I am forever thankful,” Jon paused for a minute trying to find the right words, and the audience held on to every word that he was saying.

Angela leaned over and whispered to Melissa, “Melissa Caroline, this is you.” But Melissa shook her head at her. “Come on, who else could he be talking about? This is for you, if you weren’t my best friend I could kill you.”

Melissa thought and knew that she was right. The timing’s right, and what he said last night, I can’t believe this is happening.

“A woman, not just any woman, the most beautiful woman in the world came into my life, like a whirlwind, and I must admit I’m still recovering from the initial shock of it all. She came into my life somewhat unexpectedly, because I didn’t know how much I was missing without her. I had an idea, but I didn’t really know until I found you to what extent. I was backstage after seeing you, and spending time with you today, and I thought ‘Jon, you’ve gotta do something to show her just how special she is to you.’ I thought of all of the songs I could sing to you to show you how I feel, but then it dawned on me like I was hit in the face with an anvil or something. I wrote you a song, why should I cover what someone else wrote about someone else,” Jon turned to face the side of the stage, fighting back a single, stubborn tear. “I won’t embarrass you by making you come on stage, I know you well enough to know that you’d have my head. But baby, this one’s for you. I love you,” Jon said and turned to the band to count them in.

“Cue the piano intro. Here comes Open all Night,” Angela said.

Melissa felt herself about to burst out of her skin in anticipation. Jon was handed his black and white electric guitar by one of the guitar techs, I didn’t think he played the guitar in this song, Melissa thought. Hell what do I know; he’s never sung it live before. The whole audience held their breath in anticipation of the opening chords, so they could guess what song was coming. After what seemed like hours, Jon turned around and gave his nod and familiar guitar chords blasted through the arena.

Melissa’s head spun in confusion, but last night he said Open all Night was for me. I know this song, what is it? Why can’t I place it? As her thoughts mounted Jon sang the opening lines.

“It feels like I'm walkin' on air,
Walk down our street.
When the neighbors stop to watch us going by,
you can hear 'em talking.

Ah, let them talk.”

Shock and disappointment flooded over Melissa, as she saw Steph out of the corner of her eye ecstatic and looking like she was going to cry. Guilt soon came over her, and she passed Angela and Jason and went up the aisle. When she reached the concourse she found Jason and Angela had followed her up.

Angela turned to look at her in her usual no nonsense way, “We’ve got like four minutes before the songs over, talk to me.”

“How could I think that was about me? He just met me, of course it’s for his daughter. I am so overly invested in this. I guess I just needed to know for sure where we stand. It’s not that I’m not grateful for what he’s done for me, and everything that’s happened this weekend. But now I know what’s what,” Melissa spewed.

“Miss Blake is there something I can get you,” Jason asked her, not quite sure what to do with a hysterical woman. This wasn’t exactly in his job description.

“Yes, a bottle of water would be great. We’ll stay here until you get back, there’s a concession stand down there a little way,” Angela said pointing, and took a five dollar bill out of her purse. He looked torn between leaving the women unprotected, but opted for his sanity as he could keep them in sight. Angela came up with a tissue from her purse and looked at Melissa once Jason was out of earshot. “Now you listen to me, you had every right to think what you did, hell I did too. I don’t know what he’s thinking playing with your mind like that. Of course you know he loves his daughter he just used an interesting choice of words, and the timing is just similar. I know he cares about you Mel. Even though he’s Jon Bon Jovi, he can still have ‘man moments.’”

“You know I was actually mad at her? I was actually thinking who does she think she is? His daughter, that’s who. Maybe I wasn’t cut out for this whole dating thing,” Melissa said dabbing the corners of her eyes, preventing any tears from escaping.

“Listen, you just need to talk to him and tell him what you just told me. Well maybe not everything,” Angela stopped a minute to hand Melissa the water Jason had just returned with. “Now we’re gonna go back in there and we’ll be ok, because everything is gonna be alright. We both got caught up in the moment and we’re gonna look back on this, hell we’ll youtube it when we get home tomorrow, when the adrenaline isn’t pumping and we’re gonna say of course it was his daughter, but our time will come, and its gonna be perfect. And its gonna happen when its ready and supposed to. And its gonna happen when he knows the truth.”

“Angela, I can’t even think about telling him- ” Melissa started, but was cut off when Angela put up her hands.

“This is not the time, or the place to be discussing that. But its gonna happen, I know it is. Because I know these things, and I can see how good you two are for each other. Trust me,” Angela asked.

“Do I even have to answer that,” Melissa said taking a drink from the bottle.

“Perfect, so then trust me back down to our seats, and we’re gonna enjoy the hell out of the rest of the show, and then either you and me are gonna talk after and then you’re gonna talk to him. Or the other way around,” Angela said as she heard Jon saying goodnight inside the arena.

Melissa nodded, knowing that her friend was right. “What would I do with out you?”

“Beats me, now are you ready to go get our party back on,” Angela asked smiling.

“Lead the way,” Melissa said and she put the water bottle in her purse.

Jason led the way back to their seats, as the lights were out while the band was off stage. Once they were back in their seats, Angela felt her phone ring in her purse and saw a text message from Richie. I saw you leave…is everything ok? She nudged Melissa and showed her, and Melissa nodded her head as she saw Angela respond. perfect! just got a little hot up here so close to the action…needed a bit of air…were back now no worries…did anyone else notice?

Melissa held her breath waiting for an answer; the last thing she wanted was Jon seeing her missing. She breathed a sigh of relief as Angela showed her the quick response. not at all…looks like its another 1 of r secrets

Angela responded, but Melissa didn’t see what she wrote. On the other side of her Steph was texting someone, who she assumed was Jon. After a minute or so she excused herself and moved down the row to where another security guard was sitting and he led her down a few stairs onto the stage.

Refusing to let her mind wonder to Jon, she instead tried to follow where Steph was headed but quickly lost her in the darkness. She showed Angela where she had gone, and they came up with a few theories, each one more illogical than the last. Their question was quickly answered and their theories disproved as they saw a single light focus on the stage. The audience went wild as they expected to find the band, but was surprised to find a young woman there instead. Melissa and Angela exchanged confused looks, as the saw Steph take the microphone from her father’s white stand and take center stage. The last thing Melissa wanted was one more surprise, but it looked like that’s exactly what she was gonna get. The crowd became hushed as they anxiously awaited what she had to say.

Chapter 32

Jon sat backstage at the Wachovia Center putting the final touches on the set list. After the usual cross outs and arrows that usually accompanied his set lists, Jon was satisfied and passed it around to the group of guys around him. They had been discussing it for nearly 45 minutes so there were no great surprises, and they all nodded along their approval, not that it was really needed. It usually was not such a big production, but he had asked Melissa if she had any requests, and after she had sent him nearly every song they had ever recorded, he was feeling a little overwhelmed and the set list reflected it.

“Jon, you do know that this is the longest set list we’ve done in years, right,” Dave asked passing the set list to Tico.

“I guess I got a little carried away, huh? We’ll just have to sell it that we’re a bunch of guys in our 30’s and we can still keep up,” Jon said smiling.

“Damn Jon, she’s got some influential powers over you, there’s gotta be like 50 songs here,” Tico teased.

“God, there’s not that many is there,” Jon said reaching for the list.

“No, do you think we would’ve let you get this far with 50 songs? But you do have it bad for her don’t you,” Tico asked giving him back the piece of paper so he could rewrite it legibly.

“Yeah, I do. I’m glad you’re all here,” Jon said turning to look at the four men who over the years have become closer to him than his family. “I know I’m not usually one to need approval, but I want to know what you think of Melissa. I mean I think she’s amazing, but how about some more objective opinions.”

“Damn, Jon, you really like her huh? You’ve never asked our opinion of the women you’ve been with,” Dave said.

“Well that’s because I knew Dot before anyone of you, and no one else that I’ve been with has been important enough for me to ask what you think,” Jon said while he continued to scribble the set list down.

“You know how I stand. I’ve spent a good amount of time with her, and I like her. And all the little things that Angela tells me that she probably shouldn’t be, makes me like her even more. She’s good for you,” Richie said smiling.

“And I talked to her for a while last night at dinner, she seems like a real sweetheart. She’s so genuine and a real person. I thoroughly enjoyed spending the night with her,” Tico said reassuringly.

“I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her, but I see how happy she makes you. After the year you’ve been through, anyone who can make you happy must be pretty fuckin’ special,” Dave said.

Jon sat and took in all of everything that they were saying. They had known each other so long that they spoke as one person, simply finishing one another’s thoughts. “Hugh,” Jon asked turning to his usually quiet bassist.

“Well, like Dave I didn’t talk to her too much, but if she likes you enough to stand up to your ex, than she’s a keeper in my book,” Hugh said.

“I know what all of you are saying but it just seems so quick, I haven’t felt like this with anyone besides Dot. I just don’t know what I’m doing here,” Jon said sighing.

“Is Johnny, finally a little outta his comfort zone? I didn’t think that was possible,” Richie teased through a smirk.

“Fuck you Sambora, I’m being serious here,” Jon said.

“I know me too,” Richie happily replied.

Tico, the ever-present voice of wisdom, interrupted the banter between them. “Jon look at it this way, what has she done that would make you question her or has she done anything that makes you a little skeptical?”

“Nothing,” Jon said.

“Then my advice to you is enjoy what you’ve got, and see where it goes. Don’t doubt that she’s too good to be true just yet. I did that with Maria and I almost lost her. From what I’ve seen of you two, she seems pretty damn perfect,” Tico said straightforwardly and Jon nodded at him.

“I do have to say though Jon, I never thought that you would be the one that would end up with the youngest woman outta all of us. I know she’s really young, you better watch yourself before she realizes just how old you are,” Dave teased.

“We weren’t breaking the law last night giving her alcohol last night were we,” Richie asked.

“You know damn well we weren’t, Sambora. But she’s not like the girls we used to have in the 80’s though. She’s smart and focused and-“ Jon began.

“I was only teasing,” Dave said laughing. “A little defensive there? She seems great; it’s nice to have some fresh meat around here, and a little eye candy.”

“Hey,” Jon started but stopped when Dave put his hands up in surrender.

“I’m just kidding. I’ve seen your temper, no need to show me again. Would you feel better if I told you she wasn’t that pretty? No eye candy there. I’ll keep my eye on that friend of hers.”

“I’ll fight you for her,” Richie challenged.

“Her husband may wanna get in on the action too, don’t forget,” Jon said as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.

The men around him kept up their good-natured teasing as he read the text from Melissa. were going through security…do u mind if we come back or should we head 2 r seats? Instead of answering Jon walked over to a security guard and had him radio over to Jason and Michael that they were to bring the women backstage and gave them their location. Jon headed back over to the rest of the guys and stood in front of them.

“Ok. They’re all here and they’re on their way back now. We weren’t talking about them, got it,” Jon said.

“Talking about who,” Richie said smiling.

“Thanks, and try to behave yourselves,” Jon asked.

“Would you think we wouldn’t be on our best behavior,” Dave said trying to look hurt.

“I’ve seen you on your best behavior and sometimes that’s still not saying much,” Jon threw back at him.

There was a knock at the door and Angela stood at the doorway smiling. “Do you mind if we crash the party,” she asked grinning.

“Absolutely not,” Dave said standing and offered his arm to her. “I think I’m insulted. Sambora this one’s for you.”

When Dave stepped out of the way Jon and the rest of the men couldn’t help but laugh at Angela. She was in a pair of jeans with a well-worn white Mrs. Sambora tee shirt on. “Is that an offer my dear,” Richie said as he walked over to her and led her to sit down on the couch between him and Tico.

Jon walked over to the doorway where Melissa was watching everything play out. She was dressed casually in jeans and a green shirt that made her eyes pop. Simple sheer cap sleeves and a low v-neck accentuated her breasts and her jeans hugged her hips just right. A pair of black low black heels completed her outfit. “I’m sorry I told her not to wear that,” she said.

“Don’t worry about it, I just hope it doesn’t all go to his head,” Jon said. “You look amazing tonight,” he said taking in what she was wearing.

“Well thank you, I try not to embarrass the band unlike some people,” she said.

“My only concern is, are you gonna be able to dance in those,” Jon said looking at her shoes. “Because I don’t wanna see your butt in your seat, one bit.”

“Don’t worry, we came for a party and that’s exactly what we plan on doing, dancing the night away. Besides these are nothing, don’t sweat it,” she said smiling. “You haven’t changed a bit since the last tour I see. Taking it back to the early legs,” she said gesturing to his clothes. A black v-neck tee shirt, his too tight black jeans and black sneakers were almost identical to the first time she saw him play on the last tour.

“Why fix what ain’t broke,” he said.

“Hi, Dad,” Steph said as she walked in the door, followed closely by Cara.

“Hey, you look all dressed up just to see your old man go to work,” Jon said giving her a kiss on the top of her head.

“Dad, its not like I’m gonna be stuck in some office building or something. There’s Uncle Richie, I have to go ask him something,” Steph said and walked over to the group that was talking and laughing behind them.

“She really loves you. I don’t think she could stop talking about you all the way over here. She’s really proud of you,” Melissa said quietly to Jon as to not be overheard by prying ears.

“That’s a mutual feeling let me tell you,” Jon said feeling a sense of pride that his daughter was bragging about him.

“I know,” Melissa said smiling.

“Mel, Oh my Jovi come look at this,” Angela squealed from the other side of the room.

Laughter and teasing erupted at the “Oh my Jovi” comment and Angela, like always, took it in stride reminding them that she had given them enough money throughout the years to say “whatever she damn well pleases”. Melissa walked over to the group, her hand firmly tucked in Jon’s, and stopped in front of her friend who was comfortably situated on Richie’s lap.

“Melissa, before I forget to ask, how’s my truck doing,” Tico teased.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Melissa answered with an attempt at an innocent face.

“What happened were you guys in an accident,” Jon asked Melissa and then looked at his daughter.

“No we weren’t in an accident,” Melissa said confidently.

“From what I hear it was a matter of millimeters,” Tico continued.

“What happened to ‘what happens in the car, stays in the car’” Melissa asked.

“That may work for Vegas, but they dragged it outta me,” Angela protested.

“I just asked how the drive over was with traffic,” Richie said. “She squealed on her own, and for the record she wasn’t the only one.”

“You too, Steph,” Melissa asked her, and got a shy nod in return. “Guys it wasn’t that close.”

“No guys she’s right. If we were like microscopic insects or something, then it wasn’t even close,” Angela said.

“Who’s side are you on,” Melissa asked her. “It wasn’t my fault anyway. I’m from Jersey, that makes me an aggressive driver.”

“Oh Bella, I’m just kidding. What did I tell you about teasing, it means we like you,” Tico said giving her a kiss on the cheek as he passed her to get himself another drink.

“Anyway, Mrs. Sambora, what am I looking at,” Melissa teased back at her.

“I see we have our first round of congratulations,” Richie said smiling.

Ignoring him Angela handed her a piece of paper. “Melissa they listened to us. We had control over what they’re playing tonight,” she said in a near squeal.

“Of course we listened, why wouldn’t we,” Jon asked surprised.

“Well its still a little weird to think that we have any say in what happens on stage to the biggest band in the UNIVERSE,” Angela said.

“I think I’d have some problems if I didn’t listen to my girlfriend. And you missy are not one I’d want to ignore either. But if you continue to cause fighting between my band I’m gonna have to ban you,” Jon said to Angela.

“Were you all fighting over me again,” Angela said teasingly, as her cell phone rang in her purse. Bon Jovi music blared out of the phone as it rang and the men around her tried to muffle their laughs. Answering the phone to stop the ringing she stopped and looked them all in the eye. “Remember what I said, I’ve given you a lot of money over the years.” She stood and walked to the door to take the call in private and Melissa could hear her talking to Tommy.

The men returned to their conversations and Melissa remembered the piece of paper that she was handed and saw that she did in fact have a bit of influence over what they were playing.

“Jon most of these songs you don’t usually play. Are they really because I asked you,” Melissa asked.

“Of course. And if you didn’t give me like 100 songs there would probably be more of your requests in there,” Jon said giving her a kiss on the temple.

Angela made a rather dramatic reentry and declared that it was getting close to show time and they should be heading to their seats. Now way were they gonna be the slightest bit off because they were distracted.

Melissa, Angela, Steph and Cara said goodbye to the guys pretty quickly, but each stopped an extra minute to linger a bit longer. Angela was still getting some teasing from Dave about her shirt and he was assuring he that he would buy her a “Mrs. Bryan” shirt that she promised to wear around his girlfriend. Steph was deep in conversation with Richie, but couldn’t be overheard by anyone. Melissa lingered a little longer to talk to Jon, not able to leave him. He was even more irresistible when he was in “performance mode”.

“Are you sure you have everything you need,” Jon asked her.

“Yup I’ve got the tickets, and this lovely lanyard,” Melissa said pulling her all-access pass over her head.

“And if you need anything at all you’ll let Cara or Jason know,” Jon asked.

“Yes, I’ll let them know, but I have done the whole concert thing before,” Melissa teased.

“I know, I’ll see you out there,” Jon said as Angela and Steph appeared behind them.

“I guess it’s 20 minutes till show time when we finally get kicked out,” Angela said.

“Ok have fun you guys and be safe,” Jon said. “Keep your phone where you can feel it and make sure it’s on vibrate,” he whispered to Melissa as he gave her a quick kiss goodbye.

Melissa, Angela and Cara made their way into the hall, but Jon grabbed Steph’s arm before she could join them. “You ok, sweetie?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for letting me come this weekend. I love seeing you guys play, and I usually don’t get to go. Have fun dad, I’ll be watching,” Steph said giving him a kiss on the cheek.

“I love you hun, you know you can come watch your old man play anytime,” Jon said pulling her into a hug.

“I love you too Dad,” Steph said before leaving and following the women in the hall and up to their seats.

Once the women were gone Jon shut the door and turned to his band mates. “OK guys, there’s a couple changes to the set,” Jon said to many groans.

“Just one show I’d like to see you make a set list and leave the damn thing alone,” Richie said getting grabbing a pen to make the necessary changes on his copy.

“I’ve got some special women in my life, and I just want to show them how much I care,” Jon said smiling.

Upstairs, the four women made their way to their seats with the help of their security and sat back waiting in anticipation for the show to start. As promised, the seats were fantastic, even better than seats on the floor. They had a clear view of all of the guys and the side ramps came right out and even a little past their seats. The only thing between them and the stage was a low rail and next to her Melissa could see Angela calculating how to get on stage and past security. Melissa found an interesting image in her head of Angela running on stage with Jason, who was easily double her size, leaping from the chair next to her to stop her. On the other side of her she could imagine Steph looking on in horror and Angela rushed the stage. Shaking her head and willing the thought away Melissa put her phone on vibrate and slipped it into her pocket as she had been asked.

They made small talk with each other as they waited for the lights to go down, and the arena around them was buzzing in anticipation. A few minutes before eight, Ron Jaworski and Craig Spencer, both co-owners of the team, along with their wives made their way down their row to their seats. The reintroduced themselves and spoke a few minutes to each of them as they made their way to their seats. It seemed as though everything and everyone was now in place and the band could finally get to work. Melissa felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and she took it out. She read a simple its show time… and as she read the last letters the lights in the arena went out and the crowd went wild. Jumping to their feet Melissa and Angela joined in the screaming as they could see movement on stage.

This is gonna be one hell of a show, Melissa thought, yup that’s my boyfriend up there. You’ve gotta be friggin’ kidding me!
